NOTE —

If your blog post's featured images are fairly low resolution, you may want to delete the top image canvas. Your blog will still look gorgeous, but the top banner section looks best when you upload an image that's 2500px on the long side. You can also use our fave TinyJpeg to make them small so your blog posts still load quickly!

Turning Documentary Moments Into Editorial Art: My Approach to Wedding Photography

September 23, 2024

I like to say that I’m a documentary photographer with an editorial photographer’s eye. And, in a world where everyone is throwing out words, maybe it’s hard to really know what that is. Here’s how I see it :: When people hear “documentary photography” they think of photos from Life Magazine, sometime real – maybe even something (a little too) raw. When people hear “editorial photography,” they often think of posed, magazine-worthy images with perfectly styled couples in glamorous settings. But to me, wedding day photography is about so much more than just quickly snapped shots and staged shots alike. It’s about turning real, authentic moments – documentary moments – into art. Capturing the emotions and connections of your wedding day in a way that’s not only beautiful but feels true to who you are.

Wedding photography doesn’t have to be stiff or overly posed. In fact, the most stunning photos are often those that capture raw emotion and natural interaction, elevated with an artistic touch. I aim to strike a balance between creating timeless, magazine-worthy images while allowing real, unscripted moments to unfold naturally.

My process begins by blending into the background, letting the day unfold as organically as possible. I pay close attention to how people interact, how they move, and the emotions that come to the surface. With a careful eye, I capture those moments with an editorial mindset—considering composition, lighting, and detail—without interrupting the natural flow of the day.

One of my favorite moments to capture is when a couple has a private moment together amidst the chaos of the day. During a recent wedding, the couple sneaked away for a quick breather just before their reception. They were unaware of the camera, completely lost in their own world, laughing together. That image, though candid, has all the hallmarks of an editorial photo: emotion, beauty, and timelessness.

If you’re looking for wedding photos that blend the beauty of editorial photography with the authenticity of real life, I’d love to chat about how I can capture your story. Your wedding day is unique, and your photos should reflect that truth, blending art with life.

BEHIND THE LENS

MEET
April

Photographer, wife, mother, reader of Jane Austen and historical romance, lover of Jesus and your dog.

I’m April — a wedding and fashion photographer drawn to beauty that doesn’t ask for attention. My work is rooted in emotional honesty, editorial intention, and the belief that photographs should feel like memory: textured, tender, and true.

Clients come to me for my eye, but stay for the calm, grounded experience. I’ll notice the way your partner reaches for your hand. I’ll straighten your train before the doors open. I’ll catch your grandmother watching you with tears in her eyes — and you’ll have the photograph forever.

Based in Texas, often found in New York, London, or wherever love is dressed to the nines. I take on a limited number of commissions each year so every story gets the space it deserves.
