NOTE —

If your blog post's featured images are fairly low resolution, you may want to delete the top image canvas. Your blog will still look gorgeous, but the top banner section looks best when you upload an image that's 2500px on the long side. You can also use our fave TinyJpeg to make them small so your blog posts still load quickly!

Snap Happy: How to Choose the Perfect Venue for Stunning Photos

October 2, 2024

So, you’ve got a big event coming up and you’re overwhelmed by the amount of types of choices there are for where to hold the party. I get it. It can be hard to pull it all together. The secret sauce to the wedding celebration of your dreams? Picking the right venue that makes every snapshot look like it was taken by Annie Leibovitz herself.

Now, let me preface by saying that your Wedding Planner is the person to guide you through this. They know the details you don’t even want to think about. But, it’s never too early to look 😉

You’re wanting that gorgeous, destination wedding vibe that has it all? Let’s dive into the art of venue hunting, shall we?

Old World Interiors: Time Travel, No DeLorean Needed

There’s something irresistibly charming about venues that have been around longer than your great-grandma. Old world interiors bring a touch of elegance and history that modern minimalist spaces just can’t compete with.

Architecture with Attitude

  • Think grand staircases begging for a dramatic entrance (or exit), stained glass windows that cast kaleidoscopes of color, and ceilings so ornate they make you question your life choices in drywall.

Texture and Detail

  • Every nook is a potential backdrop. Intricately carved woodwork, vintage wallpaper patterns, and antique chandeliers add layers of interest to your photos. Instagram filters? You won’t need them.

Storytelling Spaces

  • These venues have character (and maybe a ghost or two). They add a narrative depth to your photos—perfect for when you want to appear deep and mysterious on social media.

Tip: Check out historic mansions, old libraries, or vintage theaters. Just remember to respect the property—no one wants to be the person who knocked over a century-old vase.

Outdoor Photo Spaces: Where Mother Nature Does the Decorating

If the indoors isn’t your scene—or you’re just looking to avoid that “lived through the Victorian era” scent—outdoor venues offer limitless possibilities.

Natural Light, Natural Beauty

  • The sun is the OG lighting technician. Golden hour (that dreamy time just after sunrise or before sunset) bathes everything in a flattering glow. It’s like nature’s own Photoshop.

Seasonal Backdrops

  • Cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fiery foliage in autumn, and a winter wonderland if you’re brave enough to face the cold. Each season offers a unique palette.

Space to Play

  • Fields, forests, beaches—outdoor venues give you room to get creative. Want to ride a horse into your event? Go for it (but maybe check with the venue first).

Tip: Always have a Plan B for weather surprises. While a little rain can make for romantic photos, no one looks good in a torrential downpour—except maybe ducks.

Best of Both Worlds: Hybrid Venues

Can’t decide between vintage elegance and open-air freedom? Some venues offer stunning old world interiors *and* gorgeous outdoor spaces. It’s like getting guac and queso on your burrito—pure bliss.

Garden Estates

  • Wander from a grand ballroom straight into manicured gardens.

Historic Farms

  • Rustic barns with chic charm adjacent to rolling fields. (Think Blackberry Farms, not your grandpa’s farm up the road)

Boutique Hotels and Restaurants

  • Stylish indoor spaces with rooftop terraces or courtyards.

Tip: Scout the venue at the same time of day you plan to have your event or shoot. Lighting can change faster than a cat’s mood. And don’t worry, I’ll do this too as prep for your wedding.

Choosing the right venue is like picking the perfect outfit—it should reflect your style, flatter you from every angle, and make you feel absolutely fabulous. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless allure of old world interiors or the fresh vibrancy of outdoor spaces, the key is to find a place that makes you shine brighter than a supernova (or at least your ex’s new partner).

Remember, the venue sets the stage, but it’s your presence that steals the spotlight. So go forth, explore, and get ready to make some memories (and photos) that are as stunning as you are.

Ready to find the perfect venue that will make your wedding photos truly unforgettable? Whether you’re dreaming of timeless old-world charm or stunning outdoor scenery, I’m here to help you discover the place that brings your vision to life!

BEHIND THE LENS

MEET
April

Photographer, wife, mother, reader of Jane Austen and historical romance, lover of Jesus and your dog.

I’m April — a wedding and fashion photographer drawn to beauty that doesn’t ask for attention. My work is rooted in emotional honesty, editorial intention, and the belief that photographs should feel like memory: textured, tender, and true.

Clients come to me for my eye, but stay for the calm, grounded experience. I’ll notice the way your partner reaches for your hand. I’ll straighten your train before the doors open. I’ll catch your grandmother watching you with tears in her eyes — and you’ll have the photograph forever.

Based in Texas, often found in New York, London, or wherever love is dressed to the nines. I take on a limited number of commissions each year so every story gets the space it deserves.
